What’s going on with Windsor’s head coach position?

The University of Windsor thought they had their new lead coach. It turns out that's not the case...

Dennis Fairall1

The University of Windsor’s track team is not in the best shape at the moment as they wait for the lead coaching position to be filled. Windsor is one of the country’s best track teams but right now they are the midst of a bit of drama because not only do they not have a coach right now, but the person who was supposed to step in to fill Dennis Fairall’s shoes has decided that he doesn’t want the job after all.

Fairall coached the team for 29 years helping to build the track team’s reputation up to what it is today: one of the best in the CIS. Andy Hahn was to be his replacement. In fact, Hanh accepted the offer in May but has since gotten a case of cold feet. The school announced on Wednesday that Hahn is not longer going to be their new guy.

A recent CBC article quoted the university’s athletic director Mike Havey on the issue. “We’re not in the place we’d like to be, this wasn’t the plan, obviously. We’d found our permanent solution, we’d hired Andy Hahn and we were happy with the choice and poised to move forward.”

In the meantime, this means that the school’s athletes and coaching staff are in a bit of a standstill. They will continue to train their best while the coach situation is up in the air while they hope that the team’s reputation does not become tarnished.

Since Fairall coached at the school for 29 years, it has been that long since they’ve had to hunt for coaching talent. And when Fairall stepped in, the level of success had by the team wasn’t what it is today.

Fairall exits the Windsor track team after having an incredibly successful three-decade-long career. He’s a much-adored coach who made a name for himself for his signature style of coaching, tailoring training programs to every single runner on the team. Numbers that might best quantify his success might be the 65 coach of the year awards that he won, the 25 CIS championship titles his athletes won or the presitigious Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee coaching award of excellence. He also is the coach of Melissa Bishop– Canada’s women’s 800m record holder and medal contender for the Rio Olympic Games.

Fairall still coaches Bishop as she heads to the Olympics in Rio this summer. The Windsor athletes will wait for news of a new lead coach.
