A world record performance at the world championships will once again be worth an extra $100,000 US, the IAAF has announced. Sponsors TDK and Toyota have agreed to dole out extra cash to athletes who set world records during the event in Moscow that starts on Aug. 10. To qualify for the cash bonus, the new world record mark must surpass the old one – an equal mark won’t suffice.
Electronics company TDK has been supporting the men’s events at the world championships for its entire 30-year history since the inaugural championships were staged in Helsinki, Finland, from Mike Powell’s long jump competition against Carl Lewis at the 1991 Tokyo world championships to Usain Bolt’s sprint world records at the 2009 edition in Berlin.
Toyota is offering the same sponsorship package for the women, having joined as a partner at the 2003 world championships in Paris and continuing through Blanka Vlasic’s epic high jump gold at the 2007 Osaka world championships to Sally Pearson’s blazing 100m hurdles performance at the 2011 edition in Daegu.
Toyota will supply more than 200 vehicles to support the transportation of athletes and staff across the city of Moscow during the event, as well as the Prius lead car for the marathon competitions.
More than $7 million US in prize money is up for grabs in Moscow
