This 4x400m relay team staged an epic comeback after dropping the baton
Despite a dropped baton and having to backtrack to recover, this 4x400m relay did the unthinkable by staging an epic comeback to win the race.

In a 4x400m relay, every second counts as athletes are running at top speed leaving little room for error. A dropped baton is something a team typically has trouble coming back from.
The South Shore High School boys team had no such trouble as seen in this latest video.
Between the third and fourth leg of the race, which was held at the Armory in New York City, a botched exchange led to a dropped baton. South Shore was in the lead at the time.
The runner stopped, turned around, and picked up the baton but lost considerable time (approximately two to three seconds) to the lead team falling back to second place (for the time being). From there, the athlete anchoring the team clawed his way back before taking the lead in the final metres of the event.

The announcer’s reaction is also pretty much in line with how the event unfolded.

The finish happened during heat three of the varsity boys 4x400m relay as part of the PSAL Indoor Championships, a high school competition in New York City. South Shore ended up winning the race in 3:23.84, 0.07 seconds ahead of Boys and Girls High School.
