The Honolulu Marathon looks pretty good right now as the Canadian winter is in full swing. The 2016 race was held this past Sunday and is quite accessible for Canadians, especially those living on the west coast, with the option of direct flights to Hawaii.
Runners will have to be up early on race day as the marathon begins at 5 a.m. local time to avoid the daytime heat and humidity. At this year’s race, the Kalakaua Merrie Mile was held for the first time with Canadian Nicole Sifuentes finishing as the top woman in 4:29. Nate Brannen finished second in the men’s race running 4:08.
The Honolulu Marathon is consistently ranked as one of the world’s largest road races. The race was ranked 12th in the world in 2015 in terms of finishers with 21,546. It also attracts a large number of runners from Japan each year.
An estimated 25,000 runners took to the start of the 2016 Honolulu Marathon.

The race provides runners with one last opportunity before the new year hits to squeeze in a late-season marathon. Honolulu also has a memorable turquoise finisher t-shirt as well as a must-have race medal for those who covet the race bling. Both of the finish line gear can be seen in the gallery featured at the top of this page.

Lawrence Cherono and Brigid Kosei, both of Kenya, won the men’s and women’s races on the weekend in the full distance event. See more from the race here.
