VIDEO: Lionel Sanders completes Boston Marathon with his mother
Lionel Sanders, one of the world's top full-distance triathletes, finished the Boston Marathon with his mother Rebecca on Monday.
Ironman world record holder and Canadian Lionel Sanders ran the 2017 Boston Marathon on Monday.
Sanders, 29, ran the world’s most famous road race with his mother Rebecca (Becky), who completed her fifth Boston. One of triathlon’s biggest stars, Sanders put in a hard effort for the first 25-30K; he then waited for his mother so the two could finish together.
Though Sanders has completed a number of marathons, they have come after five hours of racing as part of the 3.8K swim, 180K bike and 42.2K triathlon. Boston was his first open marathon and he was able to qualify with his run leg from the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.
The two finished in 3:35:40. Sanders completed the first 25K in 1:39:06, which translates to approximately 3:57 per kilometre pace. He slowed through 30K and then the Sanders duo ran from the 30-35K mark on to the finish on Boylston Street in downtown Boston. Canadian Running caught up with Sanders, who is racing the 2017 North American Championship Ironman 70.3 St. George on May 6, following Monday morning’s marathon.

Sanders has a rich running background having competed as a varsity athlete in university. He’s also dabbled in the open distance races including the Around the Bay 30K in a blistering 1:36:53 in 2013. Sanders ran 15:06 for 5K last weekend at the Spring Thaw 2017 in Windsor, Ont.
