Julie-Anne Staehli and Luc Bruchet to headline Canadian 5K Virtual Championships
Despite no in-person event, this year's elite field is beginning to stack up
After last year’s race was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Canadian 5K Championships are returning this fall. While this year’s race will be held virtually, several of Canada’s top runners will be participating, including Olympians Julie-Anne Staehli and Luc Bruchet. The race will take place from August 28 to September 10.

Registration is ongoing, but so far, race organizers have announced five athletes who will be competing in the elite category. Aside from Staehli and Bruchet, who will both be racing the 5,000m in Tokyo this summer, Sarah Beairsto, Sasha Gollish, and Kate Bazeley will also be competing for the Canadian 5K title. More elite entries are expected to be announced as we get closer to the date.

Team relay challenge
Race organizers have added an additional option to this year’s event: the team relay challenge. Runners across Canada are encouraged to join with their friends, family or running buddies to create teams of four in one of three categories: men’s, women’s or mixed (two men and two women). Each member of the team must complete their run within the allotted date range, and their times will be added together to create a final score. All participants will receive a finisher’s medal, and prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in each category. Individual age group medals will also be given out to the top 3 in each age category.
