Comrades winner suspected of doping

Comrades Marathon champ Ludwick Mamabolo has been accused of doping, and could be stripped of his title.

South African runner and Comrades Marathon champ Ludwick Mamabolo has been accused of doping, and could be stripped of his title.

Should Mamabolo be stripped of his title, fellow South African distance runner Bongmusa Mthembu, who came in second place, will be declared the winner, according to the iol sport website. Mthembu, however, is not yet celebrating just yet.

“I have been told that he (Mamabolo) is making an appeal,” Mthembu told the website. “We will wait to see what the second test reveals, but I don’t think it’s right for me to comment at this stage.”

Mamabolo tested positive for methylhexaneamine, the SA Institute for Drug Free Sport (Saids) said in a statement earlier this week. Race organizers have not handed out any of the prize money or medals to the top 10 men and women until the results were in for all the doping tests.

Mamabolo has denied using a banned substance, the website said.
