Moving day at Maritime Race Weekend

With the recent extensive water damage that hit our race headquarters late this year, there wasn’t much choice but to move during the winter. The office roof and walls need replacing. That meant that we had to relocate our marathon equipment and swag. As luck should have it, a local runner works for a moving and storage company. When she heard about our situation, she pulled some strings and offered to donate a storage unit and moving truck to Maritime Race Weekend. Pinch me! Do I have a Fairy Godmother? I do and she works at U-Haul.

I put a call out for help and twenty-five friends offered to sacrifice their Sunday before Christmas to help move. Moving day arrived and it was a rain storm that turned the beautiful snowfall from the day before into a mess of slush and ice. As a result, my vehicle slid down the two-hundred foot driveway to race head quarters. I phoned a friend for help and twenty-minutes later, he arrived with a pick-up truck full of sand and salt to make the area safe to move.

An hour later, the moving truck and volunteers arrived – luckily no one falls. It only took us eighteen minutes to load a twenty-six foot truck. That serves as proof that many hands make lighter loads (and we possibly set a world record at the same time).

I love my job, but it comes with a lot unexpected situations and stress – it’s not for the faint of heart. Having true friends lend a hand is essential and makes the challenges easier to face.
