The race sold out, now what?

Kempton

Kempton2
Maritime Race Weekend sold out in July, but my job is far from done. My focus now changes from sales to race logistics. That job isn’t quick and easy. It will mean between 12 to 18 hour days, seven days a week from now until after the race.

My checklist is five pages long and includes over 250 tasks to complete before September. I won’t bore you by listing every mundane task, but it ranges from sign inventory, calculating water requirements, creating expo layouts, reviewing routes with RCMP, following-up with porta potty, fencing and pylon suppliers, meeting with sponsors to filling almost four-hundred volunteer spots. Some tasks will take five minutes while others will take days to complete. I love scratching things off that list.

My focus today: bibs. Registration files have been exported and bib numbers have been generated, but I saved the best part of my day for last: designing two swagtastic bibs. (Yes, I created this word.)

I’ve been planning races for four years and still enjoy it. Keeping interest that long is a record for me. Other than giving people bad news, like they missed the deferral deadline – I pretty much like every part of being a race director.

As for the bibs? My designs are above. That’s a not-so-mundane task I really enjoy as a race director. Which one do you prefer?
