Best Halloween treats to fuel your Sunday long run

Bring these treats along for your next long run – come on, you've earned it

This year, Halloween falls on the same day as your Sunday long run. Halloween treats can often be high in sugar and low in nutritional value, and sometimes eating too much of it can often result in a sugar crash or a stomach ache. We have some suggestions on some festive treats you can bring along for your run this Sunday.

Peach Rings & Fuzzy Peach

Who can resist the taste of a peach ring or fuzzy peach? The fun-sized Halloween pack of Fuzzy Peach only contains 45 calories and 10 grams of sugar – a perfect energy boost for the late kilometres during your Sunday run.

Smart snacking for runners

Gummy Bears

Similar to the Fuzzy Peach, gummy bears are low-calorie and high in sugar. A small 30-gram pack of Haribo gummy bears has few more calories than a Fuzzy Peach (100) but is slightly higher in sugar – 14 grams per pack.

M&M’s

This chocolate Halloween classic can satisfy your sweet-tooth craving without sitting in your stomach like a rock. A snack pack of M&M’s helps with portion control and only has nine grams of sugar and 10 grams of carbs.

Chocolate Raisins

Although giving raisins out at Halloween might be a crime, it is a very nutritious snack. Chocolate-covered raisins are a healthy option, satisfying your sweet tooth while cutting back on added sugar of chocolate bars and gummies. A quarter cup of chocolate raisins contains five grams of fat with 20 grams of sugar and is very high in iron. If you are bringing these along for your run, you’ll want to find a cool storage pocket to put them in or things could get messy.

Jelly Beans

Jelly beans are similar to energy gels – they’re made of glucose syrup, a source of simple carbohydrates and great for runners looking for an immediate energy release. A small jelly bean contains just over one gram of carbs and sugar per bean.

Pumpkin Beer

Beer not only tastes good, but it also restores calories, reduces inflammation and helps you relax from a hard effort. Not sure if anyone is giving beer out as a Halloween treat, and it’s a tough thing to carry on a Sunday long run. Unless you are doing a beer mile.
