Hard training can take a toll on your muscles. A runner, on average, is pounding three to four times their body weight into the ground 160 to 180 times per minute, which can leave their muscles sore and fatigued. Recognizing the importance of recovery, many of the world’s top sprinters and distance athletes use compression boots for their ability to enhance circulation and reduce swelling to get your body ready for the next training session.

There are several compression therapy devices on the market, but the most common tool in aiding recovery is the Hyperice Normatec 3 compression boots. In this review, we explore the latest iteration in the Normatec series, evaluating its features, benefits and potential drawbacks.

Why everyone needs a pair of compression boots

The best feature of the Normatec 3 is the ability to control it manually during use, providing a soothing leg massage in the comfort of your home. Unlike massage guns and foam rollers, which require manual pressure, with Normatec 3, you simply set the timer and level, then relax until the session concludes. I’ve incorporated them into my routine at the office after weekday morning speed workouts, and I find them effective for reinvigorating blood flow in my legs. As the machine starts, it pumps air into the boots, creating a gentle compression, followed by a quick tension release.

What further distinguishes the Normatec 3 is its adaptability. The compression boots feature seven intensity levels and Zone Boost technology, where users can enhance their compression therapy experience by concentrating on specific leg areas, such as calves, quads or hips.

The compression boots also cater to diverse body types, and are available in short, standard, long and extra-wide sizes. With various compression and zone settings, the Normatec 3 showcases its versatility, making it an ideal workout companion. A notable addition is the complete Bluetooth compatibility with the Normatec app, allowing you to control levels, time and pressure from your pocket device. You are fully in charge.

Things to keep in mind

There are a few key points to consider before splurging for the Hyperice Normatec 3. First off, these boots are not compact, and they are not easy to transport (it’s similar to trying to get all the air out of an air mattress after a camping trip). Normatec does sell a case for them (separately); the case is roughly the size of a personal item on an airplane. It would fit under the seat, but it would be a pain to carry around.

Another concern with compression boots is the space required to use them effectively. To get into the boots and use them to their full potential, you need to be in a seated position, where you can fully extend your legs in front of you. While testing, I’ve found that they work best when seated on a bed or L-shaped couch. You will also want to make sure you’re sitting in a comfortable place (ideally, not the floor), because once you’re in the boots, you’re committed to that spot for 15 to 60 minutes.

Remember when your friends told you running was an affordable sport? Taking care of your body and health in this way comes with a high price tag. The Normatec 3 is currently listed online for CAD $1,049. While your muscles will undoubtedly appreciate the gesture, be ready for a potential side-eye from your wallet.

In a nutshell, the Hyperice Normatec 3 isn’t just gear, it’s a recovery system with many benefits. It’s got quirks, sure, but its effectiveness will turn your post-workout pain into recovery gains.
