Running gloves: the most underrated piece of winter running gear?

The right pair can make all the difference on a cold winter run

As the temperatures start to drop and the days get shorter, it’s important for runners to adjust their gear accordingly. While most runners focus on layering up with jackets and leggings, one key piece of gear often gets overlooked: gloves. You’d be amazed at how much having warm hands can impact your body temperature, not to mention your overall enjoyment of winter running. We believe a good pair of running gloves may be the most underrated piece of winter running gear.

Running gloves: how to choose the right pair

When it comes to choosing the right gloves for running, there are a few factors to consider. When the temperature is marginal (i.e., just cold enough to need gloves for the start of your run, or around 2 C), you might only need a fairly thin pair. But when the mercury drops below freezing, you want something that’s insulated enough to keep your hands and fingers warm. Look for gloves made from materials like fleece or synthetic blends, which are lightweight, yet still provide ample warmth. (Most of the major running brands make gloves of varying weights; many also have reflective elements, to keep you visible to cars on dark early-morning or evening runs.)

The fit is another consideration. Too tight, and they can reduce blood flow and make your hands even colder. Too loose, and they’ll be uncomfortable, and may even fall off. They should fit snugly without being too tight or restrictive, so you can still move your fingers comfortably and easily while staying warm.

Another feature to look for is touchscreen compatibility. With more and more runners relying on smartphones for music, mapping and tracking their runs, it’s helpful to have gloves that allow you to use your phone without having to take them off. Many running gloves now come with conductive material on the index fingertip, which allows you to use your touchscreen without exposing your hand to the elements.

For runners who really struggle with cold hands in the winter, running mittens may be a better option. While you do lose some dexterity for things like tying your shoe or changing your music, mittens tend to be much warmer, and depending on the fit, might even let you make a fist inside your mitten when the tips of your fingers get cold. As with gloves, look for synthetic, moisture-wicking materials, or fleece when the temperatures really bottom out. (In extremely cold conditions, many runners swear by a thin inner glove layered under a windproof overmitt.)

Warm hands: the key to winter running happiness

Investing in a good pair of running gloves can make all the difference in your winter running routine. By keeping your hands warm and protected, you’ll keep your entire body warmer, making for a much more enjoyable run. So, don’t forget to add gloves to your essential running gear list this winter!
