SHOE REVIEW: Asics Gel-Cumulus 25

The addition of FF Blast+ in the midsole provides additional cushioning and makes the shoe lighter

Asics Gel Cumulus 25

The Asics Gel-Cumulus 25, much like the new Nimbus 25, is the shoe you know and love, with some modern tweaks. While Asics remains dedicated to its Gel technology that runners love so much, it got a makeover for 2023. Now dubbed PureGEL, the shoe is notably (20 grams!) lighter than before, without compromising on quality or ride.

Upper

The Cumulus’s upper has seen some changes. In an effort to promote sustainability, Asics has made its mesh upper out of 90 per cent recycled materials. I found the upper very comfortable and secure. Upper can be tricky for me, and cause hot spots around my heels, but the Cumulus felt good right out of the box–no need to break them in.

Midsole

One of the biggest changes to the shoe is the addition of FF Blast Plus, a softer, bouncier version of FF Blast and the same foam that’s in the Magic Speed 2 racing shoe.  The new Cumulus midsole has a layer of PureGEL to ensure a soft landing, and now FF Blast Plus for pop at take-off. The combination makes for a smooth, comfortable ride–ideal for a recovery day or some easy miles after work. This new foam is also partly responsible for the weight savings in the Cumulus.

Outsole

Like most Asics trainers, the outsole has high abrasion rubber where needed. I ran in the Cumulus on a rainy day and found the traction to be excellent. The high-abrasion rubber also allows the Asics Cumulus to live up to its promise of durability.

Final thoughts

If you’re looking for an affordable, well-cushioned, everyday training shoe, the Cumulus 25 is for you. Now, both lighter and more protective than ever, the Cumulus is an ideal choice for a road or track runner. I use the Cumulus as a warm-up shoe or easy run trainer, and sometimes even to lift weights. Its relatively flat bottom makes the Cumulus a highly versatile shoe. If you’ve got a race on the horizon and need something to train in, are looking for a new pair of shoes or are simply interested in getting back into running this spring, give the Cumulus a try!
