We love the stripped-down, modern look of this sixth version of the New Balance 890. This version retains the high-level speed and wearability that made the New Balance 890 a fan favourite. The enhancements are mainly about improving fit and overall performance while preserving the shoe’s lightness.

Built on New Balance’s PL-6 performance last (which means the shoe is is a lot lower to the ground than the 880, for example), the 890’s snappy, responsive REVlite midsole is made with speed in mind, and the outsole’s toe-spring pod and durable TPU strips give excellent propulsion at toe-off. The blown-rubber outsole’s long grooves give excellent road contact, while the spaces in between mean there is no extra weight.

The entire upper is engineered mesh for a fit that hugs the arch and feels like it’s molded to your foot. Its lightness and snug fit make it feel like a second skin (but with some cushioning), and the thermoplastic polyurethane heel is designed to keep your heel securely in place as you run. We really like this shoe’s roomy toebox.

This is not a heavily cushioned shoe, so if you like the feeling of a heel built up with a lot of cushioning (which many do), the New Balance 890 v6 may not be the shoe for you. Though it’s designed more for speed and performance over long or short distances, it may surprise you just how comfortable it is. Even if you’re used to a more pillowy ride, it may be worth it to get accustomed to the feeling of the shorter drop (the height differential between heel and toe).

If you like the Brooks Launch or the Saucony Freedom, you will love the New Balance 890.

This super modern-looking shoe comes in three colourways: Black with Thunder, Pacific with Maldives Blue and Black, and White Munsell with Black & Hi-Lite (pictured).
