Canadians to watch for at the world’s most prestigious indoor track event

Feb. 3 marks the date of the world’s longest-running and most prestigious indoor track and field event in the world.

The 111th Millrose Games, organized by the New York Road Runners, the hosts of the New York City Marathon, take place at the Armory in New York City, which features a 200m banked track. The Canadian contingent will for the most part be competing in the middle-distance events though two elites are in the sprint/hurdles events.

The Wanamaker Mile is the most famous of the races. Three Canadians, all Olympians, are in the men’s and women’s fields including Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, Gabriela Stafford and Nicole Sifuentes. Canadian women’s indoor mile record holder Kate Van Buskirk, who broke the national record last weekend, will race the 3,000m as will collegiate star and NCAA cross-country champion Justyn Knight, who is fresh off a 3:55 mile PB.

The Millrose Games until 2011 were held on a temporary track surface in Madison Square Garden, the home of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers.
