McCabe broke her own 3,000 metre record in 8:50.44

In a stellar start to the indoor track season, Vancouver’s Ceili McCabe lowered her own Canadian U23 3,000m record to 8:50.44, knocking more than two seconds off her previous record of 8:52.52. McCabe, who competes for the West Virginia University track team, also broke the WVU program record in the women’s 3,000-metre run, taking first at the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Saturday afternoon.
McCabe edged out the University of Notre Dame Indiana’s Olivia Markezich, who ran 8:50.48, with North Carolina Wolfpack’s Samantha Bush running to third in 8:54.12.

McCabe’s previous 3,000m record was set at the Colyear-Danville Season Opener in 2021. The third-year athlete had what seemed destined to be a record-breaking XC season, but didn’t finish as well as hoped at the NCAA championships. McCabe was 24th in the 6K race at the championships in Stillwater, Okla., running 20:03.2. She won the Big 12 XC Runner of the Year award after winning every meet she entered leading up to the champs.

“It’s nice to see Ceili rebound off of what we felt was a performance less than she was capable of at the Cross Country NCAA National Championship,” McCabe’s coach Sean Cleary said to WVU Sports. “Sometimes it’s just not your day, and what Ceili has done in two weeks to put herself back in position for a performance like today’s is simply outstanding. The level of competition in Boston was truly national class, and it’s nice to see Ceili back on her A-game.”
This summer McCabe made her senior Team Canada debut at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, where she was the top Canadian finisher for 29th in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase.
After such a remarkable start to her season, fans will be looking forward to McCabe’s next performance.
