The 2021 Boston Marathon champion, Benson Kipruto of Kenya, has earned his second World Marathon Major title, winning the 2022 Chicago Marathon in a personal best time of 2:04:24.

The men’s race played right into Kipruto’s hands, as he patiently waited to deliver his kick until there was only 5K to go. Kipruto found himself in a breakaway group with 2021 Chicago champion Seifu Tura and his Kenyan compatriot Bernard Koech. Tura first made the push around 37 km, but Kipruto countered, gapping the two men by 200m. Tura finished second behind Kipruto in 2:04:49. Kenya’s John Korir closed on Koech late to take third in 2:05:01.

Kipruto said in a post-race interview that he was inspired by the performance of his training partner Amos Kipruto, who won the London Marathon last weekend. “I felt well prepared and he gave me the confidence to win today,” Kipruto said to reporters.

In the women’s race, defending champion Ruth Chepngetich went out at a blazing pace, clocking the fastest-ever 10K split in a marathon (30:40). Around 15 km, she began to fade off her hot start, eventually falling 14 seconds short of Brigid Kosgei’s world record of 2:14:04. U.S. half marathon record holder Emily Sisson, ran a near five-minute PB to finish second in 2:18:29, breaking Keira D’Amato’s American marathon record of 2:19:12. Vivian Kiplagat of Kenya was third in 2:20:52.
