Calgary Marathon reveals cool new magnetic super-medal

Runners who add the 5K to any distance (10K, half, full or ultra) will receive the extra bling to attach to their race medal

Canada’s longest running marathon, the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon is 55 years old in 2019, and to celebrate, it’s offering a cool incentive for anyone who adds the 5K to their chosen race distance: an additional medal that attaches magnetically to their main race medal. This year’s Calgary Marathon and associated races (10K, half-marathon, full marathon and 50K ultra) will take place on May 26.

“We noticed a growing trend over the last couple of year of participants doing the 5K in addition to another distance,” says race director Kirsten Fleming, who explains that the 5K happens at noon, after the other distances are finished. So the organizers decided it would be neat to somehow combine the medals, and this was the result–a great-looking, magnetic super-medal.

Five years ago, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Calgary offered the 50K ultra distance for the first time.

So runners, if you’re going to Calgary from anywhere in Canada for its 55th anniversary, go the extra distance and sign up for the 5K in addition to your 10K, half, marathon (or even 50K ultra) and snag yourself some extra bling.
