Kipruto loses shoe, wins Diamond League 3,000m steeple final

In the high-stakes Diamond League final, Kipruto loses a spike but squeaks past Morocco's El Bakkali for a $50,000 payday

Kenya’s Conseslus Kipruto inched past Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco with gritted teeth and one shoe missing in a drama-filled 3,000m steeplechase at today’s Diamond League final in Zurich. And in the process he robbed El Bakkali of a $50,000 payday. Kipruto’s time was 8:10.15, El Bakkali’s 8:10.19. (El Bakkali has a 7:58 PB.)

Kipruto’s left spike somehow came off about a minute and a half into the race, and he fell back for a bit as others took advantage of the situation. Later in the race El Bakkali appeared to trip, but managed to save himself with a little help from Chala Beyo of Ethiopia, who finished fourth. It looked like El Bakkali’s race until the final few metres. The U.S.’s Evan Jager was third, in 8:13.22.

Canada’s Matt Hughes finished 11th.

In the women’s 400m hurdles, Canada’s Sage Watson finished 7th, with a time of 55.57. Dalilah Muhammad and Shamier Little of the U.S. were first and second, in 53.88 and 54.21.
