Loch Ness Monster

The Loch Ness Marathon in Inverness, Scotland, is looking to their runners to help solve the mystery of the famous sea monster said to live there.

The marathon is offering £50,000 (nearly $93,000) to anyone who snaps a picture of the monster while running to marathon.

“We realised there was a potential for our runners to help prove once and for all whether there really is a prehistoric monster living in the loch. With so many selfies being taken on race day, surely if she is out there someone will be able to get one with her in the background,” said race director Malcolm Sutherland in a release. “The legend and mystery of the monster, along with the absolutely breathtaking scenery of Loch Ness, is one of the main reasons why people enter the event and travel from all over the world to take part.”

But it seems unlikely anyone will be taking home the money. Sutherland is having runners who think they’ve snapped a photo of Nessie, as the monster is known, submit it to be deemed a true sighting of a plesiosaur by experts. Plesiosaurs are believed to have gone extinct 66 million years ago.

“We know that not everyone believes in Nessie, but there are still plenty of other reasons to take part in the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running,” said Sutherland. “As well an iconic route, we can offer a fantastic, friendly atmosphere and a real taste of Highland hospitality.”

Still, there are reported sightings of the supposed monster each year and many believe it to be alive in one of Scotland’s deepest lochs. Runners can dream.

The Loch Ness Marathon is scheduled for Sept. 27, 2015.
