Measurement gaffe at a Bangkok half-marathon: Racers run 7K too far

Bangkok half 2
Runners at a half-marathon in Bangkok on Sunday were directed to run nearly 28 kilometres after race organizers extended the route’s turnaround point during the 21.1K event.

The Standard Chartered Bangkok half-marathon was arguably the world’s longest half-marathon after the turnaround point was extended more than three kilometres, forcing runners to race much farther than anticipated.

“The association apologizes for the mistake,” said Songrakm Kraison, the vice president of Thailand’s jogging association, told the Associated Press. “It will not happen again in the future.”

Here’s a link to the race route found on the race’s website, which indicates the half-marathon turnaround point.

The 10K race, one of the competition’s four events, was also reported to be short with many runners logging 9.7 kilometres on their GPS watches. In 2013, the half-marathon event was just 19.7 kilometres, the first of two measuring incidents in recent years.
