Norwegian distance phenom Jakob Ingebrigtsen did not disappoint at the European 1,500m record at Silesia Diamond League on Sunday, attacking the finish line to break his own European record in 3:27:14. While he seemed to fall behind pacers initially, Ingebrigsten was resurrected for the bell lap, storming ahead of second-place, Kenyan runner Abel Kipsang, who clocked 3:29:11.

Ingebrigtsen has been chasing the world record of 3:26:00, set in 1998 by retired Moroccan runner Hicham El Guerrouj. He first edged under 3:28 at Oslo Diamond League last month, running without a pacer after 800m to help him stay on track. On Sunday, Ingebrigtsen had his friend and competitor Stewart McSweyn of Australia take him through 1,200 metres. He is now the fourth fastest man in history over 1,500m, only topped by world-record-holder Hicham El Guerrouj (3:26.00), Bernard Lagat and Asbel Kiprop (both Kenyans).

Ingebrigtsen’s time is the fastest in the world this year by nearly two seconds. With British competitor Jake Wightman not racing at the 2023 World Championships next month due to injury, Ingebrigsten will be a sure favourite to take home gold.

While Ingebrigtsen was in a league of his own on Sunday, the rest of the runners in the 1,500 metre had some speedy competition, with the first nine finishers setting PBs. 17-year-old Cameron Myers finished 11th in the men’s 1,500m to set a new U18 and U20 Australian record. The young runner, dubbed by fans as the next Jakob Ingebrigtsen, now has the second-fastest 1,500m time by a 17-year-old in history–behind none other than Ingebrigtsen himself. (In 2018, a 17-year-old Ingebrigtsen ran 3:31.18 at the 2018 Monaco Diamond League.)
