More than 11,000 qualified applicants have been turned down. With the exception of 2021, when the field size was limited to 20,000 due to the pandemic, this represents the largest cut-off time in Boston Marathon history, surpassing the 4:52 cut-ff from the 2019 race.
The top five most popular qualifying races were the 2023 Boston Marathon, 2022 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, 2023 TCS London Marathon, 2022 BMW Berlin Marathon and 2022 California International Marathon. Impressively, applicants ran in 528 total qualifying marathons in their quest to secure a spot in the 2024 race.

The qualified field comprises 12,535 men, 9,440 women, and 44 non-binary athletes. Over 11,000 athletes will be participating in their first Boston Marathon, while the remaining half will return to the prestigious starting line in Hopkinton, Mass.
Jack Fleming, president and CEO of the B.A.A., recognized the remarkable achievement of over 33,000 athletes meeting the demanding qualifying standards of the Boston Marathon within just four years. He commended their unwavering dedication and determination, highlighting that Boston Marathon qualifiers are known for their commitment to achieving their goals and personal bests.
