Fall racing season is nearly upon us, and if you haven’t already signed up for one of the hundreds of events happening across the country this year, we understand. In such a vast, beautiful country, there are so many options to choose from. We’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite races and race weekends taking place across the country. Whether you’re looking for stunning scenery, a new personal best or a fun atmosphere (or all three), there’s something here for you. While this list is by no means exhaustive, we hope you’ll find an event that piques your interest or inspires you to sign up for a local race near you.

If you’re looking for beautiful scenery

For some of us, races are all about the journey, and taking in the sights along the way. From the mountains of B.C. and Alberta to the lakes of Muskoka to the stunning coastline of the Maritimes, it’s nearly impossible to narrow down the number of gorgeous race courses Canada has to offer. Still, the following events provide not only a challenge and a supportive atmosphere, they are set against some of the most beautiful backdrops this country has to offer.

Canmore Rocky Mountain Half Marathon, 10K and 5K (Sept. 10): The course winds through woodlands, beside mountain streams and through a historic mine site, with stunning views of mountain scenery. It’s a run through the Rockies… need we say more?

Treherne Run for the Hills Marathon (Sept 24): Held in central Manitoba, the course takes you through rolling hills, and it’s a beautiful way to take in the vast scenery that makes up the Canadian prairies. The community feel is an added bonus.

Muskoka Marathon (Sept. 30): Held in Bracebridge, Ont., the course runs past the region’s many lakes and forests to create the province’s most picturesque marathon (or half-marathon, 10K or 5K).

Quebec City Beneva Marathon (Sept. 29-Oct. 1): Run along the streets of Old Quebec (as well as the newer parts) and along the St. Lawrence River, this race takes runners through one of Canada’s prettiest and most historic cities. Come for the race, stay for the sightseeing!

Victoria Marathon race weekend (Oct. 6-8): The course weaves through one of Canada’s prettiest cities, providing ocean views along the way, and offers several distances for those who aren’t ready to tackle the marathon.

Prince Edward Island Marathon race weekend (Oct. 13-15): Run through the historic city of Charlottetown, participants are treated to ocean views and quaint East Coast charm. (Bonus: it’s a Boston qualifier!)

If you’re looking for a new personal best

For some of us, fall racing season means business. If you’re looking for a new personal best or chasing that elusive BQ, Canada has plenty to offer those hoping to put down a fast time.

Georgina Marathon (Sept. 10): Taking place on the southern shore of Ontario’s Lake Simcoe, this course has become known as a great place for a BQ. As a smaller race, you’ll also be fighting fewer crowds, which will help bring your time down even further.

Marathon P’tit Train du Nord (Sept. 29-Oct. 1): There’s nothing quite like the Laurentians in the fall, and this magical race weekend gives runners the opportunity to experience the province’s beauty in all of its fall splendour. It’s also a very fast, point-to-point course, so you can snag a new PB here, too!

The County Marathon (Oct. 1): Run through Ontario’s scenic Prince Edward County, this race offers stunning views and an opportunity to nab that Boston qualifier.

Toronto Waterfront Marathon (Oct. 15): The race where Cam Levins set his first national record and the site of the Canadian Olympic marathon trials, it’s flat, fast and the course is lined with spectators and cheer groups to keep you motivated.

Hamilton Marathon Road2Hope (Nov. 4-5): Run along the Hamilton waterfront, this race has become a magnet for runners looking to smash their PB or grab a Boston qualifier, thanks to its fast, net-downhill course.

If you’re looking for a great atmosphere

While most races across the country provide a fantastic atmosphere for runners and spectators alike, these events are known particularly for their fun vibes and uniqueness.

Queen City Marathon (Sept. 8-10): This is one of Saskatchewan’s top running events, and the organizers put a lot of effort into making sure it’s fun for everyone involved. There’s a real community vibe to this event, despite its size, and the fun, encouraging atmosphere will supercharge you on race day.

Beneva Montreal Marathon (Sept. 24) Take in the sights of Montreal and enjoy Quebec’s joie de vivre as you add another marathon to your race resume.

Niagara Falls Marathon (Oct. 22): Cross the finish line to the thunderous applause of Niagara Falls. What could be more exciting?

Hallow’s Eve Trail Race (Oct. 28): Participants dress up in their Halloween best to run 10K, 21K, or 42K along the trails of Vancouver’s north shore. The course is tough, though, so runners beware!
