How do I get my kids interested in running?

You want to get your kid into running but you don’t want to be that pushy parent who forces them. It’s a classic problem when it comes to parents putting their offspring in sports. Luckily, with running there are some things you can do to encourage them rather than force them.

1. Start small

Plan runs with the entire family to give the kids a taste of distance running. But remember, these distances feel really far for the young ones. Start with a kilometer or less and build gradually. You don’t want to exhaust them or they’ll just hate running. Let them set the pace. Encourage them to go slow and hold that pace.

2. Bring them to race day

Make race day an event that they can look forward to too. Pack their favourite snacks and get your spouse or babysitter to bring them to cheer you on. The more they’re involved, the more normal the race atmosphere will feel to them.

3. Organize a torch run

Get other neighbourhood families together and organize a winter torch relay. It’s a fun version of a run in case the regular one isn’t cutting it with them.

4. Include them in weekend runs

If they normally sit and watch cartoons on Saturday morning, encourage them to put their shoes on and join you for the last few minutes of your run. But have them get ready BEFORE you head out. You know how long it takes them to put on shoes, gear, etc.

5. Let them help in the kitchen

After your run, let them help make breakfast. Some runner-friendly recipes are quite simple and it’s important for kids to understand good nutrition from a young age.

6. Play tag together

If you make it a game, children are way more likely to cooperate. There are so many versions of tag so pick one and play it with them.

7. Show up to school cross-country or track meets

When your son or daughter does decide to get involved in running, be there. You know how important moral support is. They’ve worked hard too so share it with them.

8. Fill them in on kid’s races

There are plenty of races for kids out there. Let them know what to expect and encourage them to sign up. Don’t force it though or they will just work against you.

9. Buy them a cool pair of shoes

You know how excited you get when you get a new pair of shoes? Kids are the same. We’re not saying spoil them with an entire new wardrobe, just get them one reasonable pair of shoes that they get to pick themselves.
