On June 21, two men from Cape Breton, N.S., unofficially broke a Guinness World Record by playing 306 holes of golf in 12 hours.

Wes Stanford and Thomas Xidos teed off at 4:57 a.m. and wrapped up the day at 4:57 p.m., covering nearly 46,000 yards (about a marathon) at The Lakes Golf Club & Resort in Ben Eoin, N.S. While some may assume the record was achieved on a short par three course, it was actually accomplished on a regular par 72 layout that is rated as the third toughest golf course on Cape Breton Island, according to TripAdvisor.

The previous record for the most golf holes played by a pair was set in 2016 at 290 holes by British duo Jay Kelly and George Boxall. Stanford and Xidos surpassed that mark, averaging just over 25 holes per hour and completing each hole in under three minutes. They had two friends drive the power carts while they sprinted from one shot to the next, using the carts between holes.

The Guinness World Record for the most holes in 12 hours without a cart is 252, set by Swiss runner and golfer Jurg Randegger in 2021.

Their attempt at the world record was a fundraising initiative for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, and their efforts have raised nearly $15,000, surpassing their initial goal of $5,000.

“The speed at which they are doing this—they didn’t stop for a moment,” April Powers, events manager at The Lakes, told CTV News. “They started at the crack of dawn and did not let up at all. Their pace is amazing.”

The duo chose to undertake this challenge on the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, June 21, which provided them with 16 hours of sunlight in Cape Breton. Their record is currently pending verification by Guinness.
