If one of your 2024 goals is to positively impact the lives of others, joining the many runners tackling The Million Reasons Run is a great place to start. The Million Reasons Run is a virtual fundraiser for 13 children’s hospitals across Canada and is back for its fourth year this May, providing a unique opportunity for anyone, anywhere in the world, to make a positive contribution.

Since its launch in 2021, this virtual running challenge has already raised more than $5.8 million, and the 2024 edition aims to significantly boost that figure. This year’s challenge runs May 1-31. “You decide when and where you’d like to start, and just how far you’d like to go. This is your personal challenge to conquer,” the website explains.

How it works

The Million Reasons Run isn’t your typical run-a-specific-distance-on-a-specific-day kind of event. It’s entirely virtual, and participants have the freedom to complete the challenge wherever and whenever they please, with no set distance requirements. Instead of committing to a one-off distance, you can dedicate your entire month to running for the cause. Simply sign up on The Million Reasons Run website, set your personal mileage goal, and start clocking those kilometres.

Whether it’s 30 km or 300, your mileage counts for a good cause as you support and raise awareness (and funds) for Canadian children’s hospitals. Once you sign up, a personal fundraising page is created that you can then share via email or social media (with handy templates provided on the website). Tracking is flexible; connect MapMyRun, Fitbit and Garmin, or enter your runs manually.

The event website has suggestions for tackling any distance goals, helping to make it accessible to everyone, and runners have the option of creating or joining a team for added fun (consider creating one with your extended family, or your co-workers) and can earn running swag by reaching personal fundraising targets.

Group run fun

The 2024 edition of the event has a new “Group Run” feature designed to help you connect in person and head out for a run with other participants in your geographical area.

Registered participants can create a new Group Run by choosing a location, date, and start time—once created, other registered participants can browse the Group Runs in their area, and decide to join in. It’s a great way to meet new running friends and connect with your community—while logging some kilometres toward your monthly goal.

Fundraising

All donations go through SickKids Foundation and are then distributed to the children’s hospital foundation(s) closest to the given donor. While The Million Reasons Run is a fundraising initiative, organizers emphasize inclusivity—move however you like whether that’s a shuffle, a jog or a sprint. Everyone is encouraged to support in their own way.

Don’t miss your chance to be part of this impactful virtual event. As a bonus, sign up by March 31st and you could win a pair of running shoes from On Running! To learn more and sign up for the 2024 Million Reasons Run, click here.
