Kate’s appearance was a surprise – it was only revealed on the day-of that she would attend. William was there as the official starter of the three-day race. Prince George didn’t make an appearance.

The royal couple have lived in Anglesey since 2009 while Prince William worked as an Royal Armed Forces search and rescue helicopter pilot.

Kate met volunteers and some of the runners taking part in the race, which circumnavigates the island. The gruelling route includes some 4,000 metres of vertical climbs.

The duchess was described as looking “absolutely gorgeous” by people attending, the BBC reports.
