Guinness world record for most marathons falls

Larry MaconTo say that 69 year-old Larry Macon has been around the block once or twice would be almost too much of a cliche to handle. The San Antonio lawyer has broken the Guinness World Record for the most marathons completed in a year, for the fourth time.

Macon started running marathons in 1996. His first Guinness World Record was in 2008, for completing 105 marathons that year. In 2010, he ran 113 marathons, beating the record once more. Again in 2012, Macon broke his record a third time with 157 marathons completed. In a stupefying feat, Macon crushed that number in 2013, running an incredible 239 marathons over the course of the year.

Macon finds the traveling involved from getting to race to race to be more hectic than the running itself. His attitude is that “Once you get to the race, you can always run, walk or crawl to finish the 26.2 miles.”

Runners Trent Morrow and Annette Fredskov attempted to beat Macon’s record in 2013. Morrow ran 161 marathons, enough to beat Macon’s 2012 mark and Fredskov ran 366 marathons, but her races were not deemed official road races.
