How to make your New Year’s resolution Lord of the Rings themed

Looking for ideas on how to make your New Year's resolution that much more enjoyable? Here's a solution to make it Lord of the Rings themed.

Time and Distance Travelled
When thinking about your running goals for 2016, it’s beneficial to have certain benchmarks throughout the year to track your progress towards your end goal.

This is where running and The Lord of the Rings meet.

The LotrProject features a ‘time and distance travelled’ interactive timeline of Bilbo Baggins (from The Hobbit) and his journey to Lonely Mountain and Frodo Baggins (from The Lord of the Rings) on his journey to Mordor.

Frodo’s journey takes a total of 185 days and covers 2,897 kilometres while Bilbo’s is 1,529 kilometres over the course of 172 days.

Bilbo’s journey averages out to 8.9 kilometres per day while Frodo’s is tough at 15.6 kilometres each day. Fortunately, if the journey is spread throughout 2016, the milestones are much more attainable.

If the distances are too lofty there are plenty of stops along the way where you can meet in the middle (earth).

The full interactive journey can be found here.

One user on reddit noted: “I’ve been in a real running rut for months now. I lost my motivation. I lost my drive. I’ve gained about 15 pounds and am slow as molasses when I do go for a run, like once or twice a week. This [the themed timeline] is awesome and I’m starting today. I’m running to Mordor, baby!”
