Jamie McDonald, a true superhero

110813_Jamie_McDonald_1660Jamie Mc Donald is in the middle of a epic journey to run across Canada from St. John’s, N.L. to Vancouver to raise funds for some great organizations including children’s hospitals throughout Canada. When Jamie finishes his adventure he will have run over 8000K unsupported, carrying everything that he needs with him. He will also become the first person to run across the country alone.

If that is not daunting enough for you, take into consideration that Jamie does not normally run. He had never even run one marathon prior to this endeavour. When he arrvies in Vancouver he will have completed over 190 marathons since he began in March.

As a child, Jamie was in and out of Gloucester Royal Hospital over a nine-year period with a rare spinal condition known as syringomyelia, as well as a very weak immune system. I am sure the numerous health related battles that he had to endure through his childhood contributed to his determination and compassion as an adult. McDonald is no stranger to audacious and unusual feats. In 2012, he cycled from Bangkok to Gloucester, England. Just two days after arriving, he set the world static cycling record, biking 265 hours, or just a little more than 11 days.

jamie 4When Jamie reached Winnipeg in early October, I had the opportunity to run and spend some time with him during his stay. Instead of resting, McDonald took on numerous speaking engagements, including a rally at a local school and several television interviews. He worked tirelessly to raise funds for the Manitoba Children’s Hospital, which is consistent with what he has done in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes as well.

Jamie Mc Donald is the real deal, making a difference for sick kids not only by raising money for hospitals across Canada, but by being an extraordinary role model and fitness ambassador in the process. McDonald dons a Flash costume for his visits to local schools and hospitals. The modest Englishman would never say claim this, but he is a true hero.
