Two Canadian runners, Nicole Sifuentes and Kate Van Buskirk had standout performances at the Commonwealth Games in a tactical 1,500m final, finishing third and fourth, respectively.

The race saw Van Buskirk, a Toronto native, and Sifuentes, of Winnipeg, both stuck inside a tight pack mid-race and ended with impressive kicks by both Canadians. Van Buskirk finished with a 4:09.41, narrowly being edged out by England’s Laura Weightman, who ran 4:09.24. Sifuentes, who kicked from the back of the pack over the closing 200m, ran 4:10.48.

The pace of the race started slowly, similar to many championships, meaning with a single lap remaining the entire field was still in contention.

The Kenyan trio looked to be in control most of the race, but only Faith Kipyegon, who won the event in 4:08.94, ended up on the podium as the other two fell off in the final metres.

Van Buskirk in a two-time national 1,500m champion and Sifuentes won bronze at the 2014 world indoor championships.
