Claire Sumner and Corey Bellemore are champions of Ontario as the two won the provincial university cross-country championships on Sunday. Both used finishing kicks in the final kilometre to secure the victories at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships at Centennial Park in the Greater Toronto Area.

Sumner, a fourth year attending the Kingston, Ont.-based university, won the 6K in 20:16.7, narrowly defeating Toronto’s Lucia Stafford. The Queen’s athlete won her home meet two weekends ago and was able to hold off a charging Stafford in the final metres. Just 0.4 seconds separated the two.

Bellemore, popularly known as the beer mile world record holder, showed off his finishing kick to break open the race with less than 1K to go. The Windsor athlete, who ran 4:34 for the beer mile this summer, won the 10K in an impressive 30:35 over Lakehead’s Kevin Tree. The two were side-by-side in the race’s latter stages but Bellemore managed to put eight seconds on Tree by the finish.

This weekend marked conference time for university athletes across the country including the Atlantic championships and the Quebec championships. The west do not have a conference meet prior to nationals.

The event was held under cloudy skies with light rain. Temperatures were between 5-8 C as the women’s race began at 11 a.m. local time followed by the men’s race at noon EDT.

Powerhouse Guelph earned the women’s team victory at cross-country provincials, their 13th consecutive OUA title. Western, based out of London, Ont., upset the Guelph men’s team, winners of 11 previous Ontario titles, thanks to Jack Sheffar’s individual bronze.
