No longer with Nike, Phylicia George experimenting new race kits in 2017

Phylicia George, a two-time Olympian for Canada, came away from the Millrose Games with two personal bests and an individual win.

As she is no longer a Nike-sponsored athlete, Phylicia George sported a new kit at the 2017 Millrose Games in New York City on Saturday.

Known as “the world’s longest-running and most prestigious indoor track and field competition,” George came away with a win in the women’s 60m hurdles (7.98) and finished fourth in the women’s 60m (7.27). The 29-year-old is a two-time Olympian for Canada and was one of three Canadians to win a Millrose Games event. (Kate Van Buskirk and Derek Drouin also won their respective events at Millrose.)

As she no longer sports a Nike kit, George will be experimenting with different looks in 2017– at least until she is signed by an apparel company. In her third competition of the new year, George came away with two indoor personal bests at the Armory Track-hosted event in Manhattan on Feb. 11.

Though George says she didn’t have an influence in designing the kit, she adds that she “would love the opportunity to design my own racing outfits and it might be something I look into in the future.”

“The plan right now is to wear a different outfit for each race, for as long as I’m a free agent,” she explains. “In 2011 before I signed with Nike I did something similar and a lot of people started looking forward to what I’d wear at each race. So I thought it would be fun to do it again. I look forward to signing with a shoe company so I’m just taking advantage of the opportunity to do something a little different in the meantime.”

In late 2016, George was testing the waters by doing some bobsled training in western Canada after being approached by multiple-time Olympic champion Kaillie Humphries.

As George races throughout 2017, she is expected to capture some behind-the-scenes footage and post regular video blogs (“vlogs”), which will give fans an inside look in the life of an elite athlete. Check out George’s most recent video from Manhattan below.

The big event in 2017 will be the IAAF World Championships in London this August. In Rio, George qualified for the finals of each of her two events including a seventh-place finish in the 100m hurdles and an eighth-place finish in the 4x100m relay.
