Olympic Champion and World Record holder in the 800m, David Rudisha, has claimed he is interested in racing the 1500m.

“I used to run the 400m and through encouragement from my coach and friends I committed myself to the two-lap race and I have made it. I believe with hard work, I will still make a mark in 1,500m,” the Kenyan told the Star, a newspaper there.

Rudisha won the 2012 London Olympics in world record time but was unable to compete in the 2013 world championships because of an injury. He wants to continue racing the 800m in 2014 and would like a new Kenyan two-lap stud to rise to prominence before really considering making the jump up to 1500m.

“We need good transition so that the country holds the grip of the event. There are several talented athletes here who can take over. I want to encourage them,” said the 24-year-old.

The 1500m is an event largely dominated on the international scene by fellow Kenyans.

Rudisha says he is back training again in Kenya.
