Mmmmm Pi. That’s right folks, today is Pi Day, so named because here in North America March 14th is often denoted as 3/14 or 3.14 which are also the three most significant digits of the mathematical constant Ï€ (pi).

And who among us in the running community doesn’t love pi?

3.14 is also significant to us runners because when converted from imperial to metric, 3.14 miles converts to just over 5K (actually 5.05K), which is still among the most popular race and run distances around.

In fact, there are dozens of organized running events, mostly in the United States, that celebrate Pi Day with fun runs and races of 3.14 miles (5.05K). And unless you ran your last 5K “perfectly” (i.e. ran the shortest tangents of the course), it’s quite likely you ran closer to 5.05K anyway, giving you a brand new PiB to celebrate.

You might also be interested to know that running 5K, regardless of your pace, also burns roughly 300 calories, which is about the same amount in a standard slice of pie.

So why not go for a 5K run today–or better yet, a 5.05K–and then celebrate with a slice of your favourite pie.

Happy Pi Day everyone!
