Matt Hughes talks his 5K Championships win and what he plans for his downtime

Matt Hughes

Matt Hughes has finished a busy summer representing Canada in the Pan Am Games and the IAAF World Championships. He placed eighth last month in the 3,000m steeplechase at the world championships and placed first in the event the month prior at Pan Ams. Over the weekend he ran the Canadian 5K championships in Toronto’s Yorkville, claiming the title to cap off a fantastic season.

After a slower, tactical start, Hughes gauged his competition making a smart final move towards the end and pulling away to finish first place. He ran 14:16. Second was Evan Esselink in 14:19 and Justin Marpole-Bird placed third, running 14:25.

That’s a race that will close his season. Right now, he’s looking forward to relaxing a little bit and catching up with friends and family.

We talked to Hughes about his race.
