Healthy weekend snack swaps

Hey it happens. The weekend rolls around and that hard work and dedication that you’ve been exemplifying all week comes to an end. The weekend is time to recharge and reward yourself for the hours of good behaviour you just put in Monday to Friday. Oftentimes, this is when snacking or drinking high-calorie foods sets in. But wouldn’t it be more of a reward if your meals were delicious AND healthy? We’ve taken a few major weekend nutrition blunders and swapped them with a similar but healthy option.

The swap: Fast food pizza versus homemade beet crust pizza

Loaded with garden vegetables, this recipe makes sure to get you a good dose of produce, vitamins and roughage. fast food pizzas are just greasy and usually offer no or very little nutritional content. This recipe however is delicious and something your body will thank you for. It’s also a great way to use up vegetables you got at summer farmers markets.

The swap: Calorie laden beer versus grapefruit cocktails

Grapefruit is a great sub for beer. Into bitter beers? This one is sharp and citrusy and will satisfy those bitter beer drinkers. Many people are just not into sweet drinks and it can be hard to find the right cocktail. This one is just cheap on the calories and we have no complaints about that. Serve this one up in a frosted glass and throw in a shot of vodka, gin or white rum to get your ice-cold fix for evenings on the patio.

The swap: Ice cream sundae versus “cookie” banana blizzard

Soft ice cream in the summer is the best. We crave it all day or look forward to it on a hot, sweaty run. Ice cream isn’t always the best choice. We all know that. This blizzard though gives runners an option to have an icy cool sweet treat without feeling guilty. Oh, and anyone who comes up with a healthy alternative to cookie dough, like the author of this recipe has, gets major points from us!
