The swap: Mayo alternatives

Sometimes the easiest lunch to bring to work  or picnics in summer is the good old sandwich. Rather than slathering it with mayo, try one of these healthy spreads instead.

Mayo may be the classic sandwich spread yet for those trying to eat more healthy, it’s also a food to watch. It’s far from the healthiest option. Spreading a think layer of this stuff on a sandwich instantly decreased its health value. It’s laden with oils and fats, not to mention, as with many bottled sauces, you don’t always know what you’re consuming. Swap the mayonnaise for one of these options, and you’re good to go.

Mashed avocado 

No recipe needed for this one. Simply look for an avocado ripe enough to mash or puree and spread it on. For a little extra flavour, add some pepper and a little lemon or lime juice.

Rosemary, Lemon Feta Spread

This recipe takes your basic cream cheese and spices it up by adding in some feta, lemon juice and rosemary for a flavourful blend. When used as a base layer, the sandwich or wrap becomes a winner even with the most generic toppings.

Rustic Balsamic Mustard

This recipe makes the mustard right from the seed so no suspicious bright yellow and bottled mustards need to be involved in the process.

White Bean and Dill Spread

Using beans as a base, this recipe ensures that this spread isn’t going to be a high fat one. The dill has a sharp taste without being overpowering. One of the best parts is that you can also use it as a dip for chips or veggies.

Basic Basil Pesto

Making your own pesto is much simpler than it may seem. This one calls for just six ingredients to be blended together. Basil pesto is packed with flavour and can be used on crackers or on pasta if you make too much. Grow your own basil and you’ll be even more satisfied with this homemade sauce.
