Tips to keep skin clear after a workout

Since you’re a runner, that body is looking trim and toned but now you’ve got a new problem: breakouts. This body issue is a nuisance for runners and takes plenty of maintenance to prevent. If you’re suffering from acne on the face, shoulders, or chest  thanks to running, don’t loose hope. Try these fixes:

1. Don’t waste a minute before hopping in the shower

Get your butt in the shower and don’t waste a minute. It’s tempting to hang out after a run or head straight to the couch or fridge. We’ve all done it but it’s not doing your skin any good.

2. Cleanse your face BEFORE your run

This works for a lot of people. If your pores are clean when you start running (and perspiring) you’re going to get less buildup from sweat.

3. Leave the makeup on the shelf

When you’re trying to minimize your chances of clogged pores, a face full of foundation and blush is really not going to help.

4. Invest in a good cleanser or toner

Now nearly every article about acne prevention suggests getting skin care products with salicylic acid. A great one is Proactiv’s Revitalizing Toner. Body Shop also has an incredible line of tea tree products that work wonders.

5. Wear sweat-wicking material as much as possible

Winter running is tricky because you want to stay warm but if you layer too much, you just get sweaty. But sweat-wicking gear will help keep the sweat away from your skin.

6. Try oil cleansing

Some runners swear by the oil cleanse for solving acne problems. Get an oil (coconut or primrose oil works) and cleanse your face with it twice a week.

7. Your dirty gear and towel belong in the laundry

Nearly every runner is guilty of recycling running outfits and towels. It’s frustrating to have to wash clothing that you wear for just a fraction of the day but do you really want to wear yesterday’s sweat on your skin?

8. Treat yourself to a steam treatment

You don’t even have to go to a professional for this. Fill a small basin or your bathroom sink with steaming-hot water. Add a little rosemary and a few drops of fresh-squeezed lemon juice. Let your face hover over the hot water with a towel draped over top to keep the steam in. Voila!
