Athletics Canada announces Team Canada for 2023 World Athletics Championships
A team of 50 athletes will travel to Budapest later this month for the World Athletics Championships

Athletics Canada has announced the names of 50 athletes who will make up Team Canada at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, from Aug. 19-27. Team Canada will be made up of 26 women and 24 men, four fewer athletes than we sent to last year’s championships.
Canada is coming off a successful performance at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Ore., where we secured four medals: one gold, two silver and one bronze. Notably, Canada is the reigning world champion in the men’s 4x100m relay, defeating the powerful U.S. team on their home turf last July. The quartet of Andre De Grasse, Aaron Brown, Brendon Rodney and Jerome Blake are eager to defend their title in Budapest.
Moreover, Budapest will witness the world championship debut of several athletes on their first Team Canada roster. Ben Flanagan, Savannah Sutherland, Jazz Shukla, Kieran Lumb and Simone Plourde will all don the Team Canada singlet for the first time at the world championships.
Sutherland has been a rising star in Canadian athletics, already claiming victory in the NCAA Championships as well as the Canadian title in the 400m hurdles this season. Now, she has the opportunity to showcase her talent and compete against some of the world’s best.
Flanagan is known as one of the top road runners in North America and has held multiple Canadian records from 5K to the half marathon. At the beginning of the season, the 28-year-old transitioned off the roads and mentioned his goal was to qualify and compete at the world championships. Now, he will join forces with Canada’s Mohammed Ahmed in the men’s 5,000m.
