Canadian marathoner Rory Linkletter has achieved his goal of running a sub-four-minute mile. The 27-year-old stopped the clock at 3:59.05 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Open on Saturday morning in Boston.

“This was a dream that was about 12+ years in the making,” Linkletter said on social media about running sub-four. “There is a lot of talk about whether the sub-four mile has lost its lustre over the last few years… but for this marathoner, it meant a lot.”

Linkletter was one of seven men who went under four minutes at the first Boston University indoor meet of the season. He is the 74th Canadian to run a sub-four-minute mile and only the second Canadian to accomplish the feat while also being a sub-2:12 marathoner. He joins Canadian marathon record holder Cam Levins as the only other Canadian to do so.

“There are lots of questions as to why I would do this, the answer is simple,” said Linkletter. “I still do this because I love it. I had an absolute blast today.”

Linkletter ran a negative split, hitting the opening half of the mile (809m) in 1:59.74 and closing the final 800m in 1:59.31.

The Canadian-born marathoner, who lives in Flagstaff, Ariz., has been working on his speed over the last few months with his coach, former U.S. marathoner Ryan Hall, to improve his speed in the marathon. For now, Linkletter says it’s back to the “regularly scheduled programming” (the marathon) as he begins to prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
