Arguably one of Canada’s most competitive 5K road races, the BMO St. Patrick’s Day 5K in Vancouver’s Stanley Park produces fast times followed by plenty of fun at the finish.

Part of the B.C. Super Series and host of the provincial 5K road race championships, the race certainly draws a fast field of local and elite competitors. The course begins near the Pavilion on Pipeline Road and follows Stanley Park Drive on the park’s east side affording fantastic views of the harbour. Last year’s winners were Kelly Wiebe (14:27) and Rachel Cliff (16:15). Additionally, there were 135 runners under 20 minutes for 5K.

The event is as (if not more) popular for the famous post-race party hosted by Granville Island Brewing (GIB) which extends well into the afternoon and features plenty of fun and entertainment. Participants also enjoy a generous spread of refreshments such as Irish stew from Urban Fare, KIND bars, coconut water, artisan breads, cupcakes, chips and coffee. The event also raises funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Ontario’s capital also hosts a popular event that features an out-and-back course through the heart of downtown Toronto running right past the CN Tower and Rogers Centre. The St.Patrick’s Day 5K Run/Walk starts and finishes just outside the Roundhouse, home of Steam Whistle Brewing, where participants gather inside after the race. There they are treated to complimentary beer and chilly as well as enjoy live music and an awards ceremony. Proceeds from the race support Achilles Canada, an organization that enables people with disabilities to take part in athletics.

Another popular event is the Original St. Patrick’s Day Road Race which celebrates 29 years running in 2016 and takes place in Calgary. The races start and finish at Central Memorial High School where participants can keep warm before and celebrate after with refreshments, draw prizes and awards. The course features a mostly flat loop and runs along the Bow River and Glenmore Reservoir. The grand prize draw offers the chance to “Win your weight in Village Brewery Beer!”
