Weekend rundown from races across Canada
Catch up on what happened at these select April 29-30 road races across Canada.
The April 29-30 weekend was generally a quieter one on the Canadian racing front but there were still a number of quality events nationwide. Tens of thousands of runners across Canada took part in weekend races including in Victoria, London, Ont., Calgary and Mont-Saint-Grégoire, Que., among other locations.
Here’s a rundown of the notable races that you may have missed from Saturday and Sunday.
Marathon des Érables
One of 17 marathons in Quebec in 2017, the Marathon des Érables was the first road 42.2K of the year in the province. The Mont-Saint-Grégoire, Que.-based event had a record turnout, 3,800 participants, for the fifth annual road race.
William Fortin (2:58:14) and Leonie Boudreau-Labossiere (3:18:11) won Saturday’s race.

Vancouver’s Dayna Pidhoresky won her fourth consecutive road race in 2017 at the Times Colonist 10K in Victoria. Her latest win, in 33:43, follows her victories at the St. Patrick’s Day 5K, the Around the Bay 30K and the Scotiabank Montreal 21K. Daniel Kipkoech meanwhile went sub-30 running 29:59 for the 10K title.

The Times Colonist reports that there were more than 9,000 participants in the standalone 10K.

Forest City Road Races

Olympian Eric Gillis and Pan Am Games bronze medallist Rachel Hannah were in London, Ont. for the Forest City Road Races. Hannah assumed pacing duties for the sub-40:00 10K group and went on to win the race in 39:25, two weeks after she ran the 2017 Boston Marathon, her Abbott World Marathon Majors debut. Kevin Blackney won the men’s race in 31:42.

The event, which featured a 5K and half-marathon in addition to the 10K, sold out ahead of race day.

Sunday was a busy one in Alberta’s largest city as the 37th annual Calgary Police Half-Marathon featured a 5K, 10K and 21.1K. Angus Rawling (1:16:27) and Aliya Abdallah (1:30:45) won the longstanding half-marathon.
Runners may have had added motivation Sunday as Olympic bronze medallist in the men’s 4x100m relay Akeem Haynes was on site. The fixture on the Calgary circuit was first run on April 27, 1980.

Ed Whitlock Half-Marathon
The newly-named Ed Whitlock Half-Marathon was part of Waterloo Marathon race day in southern Ontario. The race announced on Friday that the half-marathon would be renamed after Whitlock, who passed away in March at 86. The Canadian masters legend, the only person over the age of 70 to have ever broken three hours in the marathon, won the event in 2016 and set a men’s 85-89 world record that day.
