To celebrate the fourth of July, some of the world’s best distance runners lined up to race the AJC Peachtree 10K in Atlanta, Ga. Two-time Olympian Senbere Teferi of Ethiopia won the women’s race in a sprint finish and the current 10K world record holder, Rhonex Kipruto, won his second Peachtree title in 27:25, shy of his course record from 2019.

Teferi and Irene Cheptai of Kenya exchanged the lead back and forth over the final few kilometres, but it was Teferi who outkicked Cheptai to the finish to claim her first Peachtree title in 30:49. Cheptai finished second in 30:49 and the marathon world record holder, Brigid Kosgei, was third.

The 27-year-old Ethiopian distance runner has proved herself as one of the world’s top road runners. In 2021, she set the women’s 5K world record at the Adizero Road to Records in Germany with a time of 14:29. At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, Teferi won silver in the women’s 5,000m.

In the men’s race, it was a battle between Kenya’s former half marathon world record holder Kibiwott Kandie and the current 10K world record holder Kipruto. In 2019, Kipruto broke the North American 10K soil record, clocking 27:01 to win the Peachtree 10K. The two were together in the lead pack until 2K to go when Kipruto made his attack, gapping Kandie by 50 metres.

Kipruto won the race in 27:25 despite sleeping overnight at the Doha airport on Saturday night due to a flight cancellation. Kandie was second in 27:34 and Jemal Yimer rounded out the podium for third in 27:49.
