Vancouver’s Kieran Lumb has clearly recovered from his national XC championship win last weekend: the 25-year-old set a new national indoor 3,000 metre record of 7:38.39 in Boston at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville season opener on Saturday. “Great to convert some solid fall training into a few performances these past two weekends,” Lumb wrote on Instagram.

Lumb is now the first Canadian man to run under 7:40 in the 3,000m, and took 1.7 seconds off Mohammed Ahmed’s record from 2016, finishing third behind American runners Nico Young and Brian Musau, who finished in 7:37.73 and 7:38.04 respectively.

Lumb has been bounding from strength to strength this fall. In September, he beat the 3,000-metre outdoor record twice within four days. He followed that performance with a fifth-place finish and PB in the world road mile in Riga, Latvia. Lumb represented Team Canada for the first time at a world championship in August, and did not advance out of the heats of the men’s 1,500m, but said he considered the championships “a valuable experience.”

Lumb says he hopes his consistent performances will take him to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Americans smash NCAA 5,000 metre records

In only her third indoor race, Florida’s Parker Valby became the first woman to run a sub-15 minute 5,000m in collegiate competition. Valby bested Emily Sissons 2015 record of 15:12.22 by speeding to 14:56.11 in Boston on Saturday, just two weeks after being crowned NCAA XC champion.

Valby was also the 2023 NCAA  outdoor 5,000m champion, and in July became the first female track and field athlete to secure an NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deal with Nike.

It has been a great season for top XC athletes: the men’s NCAA winner, Graham Blanks, also snagged a remarkable 5,000 metre record in Boston, running 13:03:78, besting the previous NCAA indoor record of 13:08.28 set by Lawi Lalang in 2012, and sneaking under the 2024 Olympic qualifying standard of 13:05.
