These four arguments for summer running will prevent you from skipping runs this season

As the temperatures continue to climb, we remind you why running through the summer heat is well worth your while.

running

It’s hot, humid and the sun is burning holes through your running clothes (OK, not actually). But hey, at least it’s not mid-February. Getting out for your training runs may be tough in the stifling heat, but now is the time to remind yourself of the joys it can bring. Here are five reasons why summer running is actually awesome:

RELATED: How to adjust your race effort for heat and humidity

Heat and humidity are like altitude for us average Joes

Training at altitude is known to boost fitness and endurance by stimulating the production of red blood cells which carry oxygen to the working muscles. While not entirely the same, training in hot and humid conditions also stress the body forcing it to adapt and become more efficient at using the oxygen and energy available. It does this by increasing the volume of blood, specifically plasma, which helps with regulating body temperature. An indirect effect of greater blood volume is an increase in the number of blood cells, including red blood cells. Taken together, you’ll get a small boost in fitness simply by running and training in the heat, even if your paces don’t seem to suggest so. Best of all, when you do run in cooler conditions, you’ll definitely be ready to run fast.

You can run at 5 a.m. or 10 p.m. and still enjoy some daylight

The summer solstice marks the longest day of the year but the weeks and even month or two into summer also contain plenty of daylight to take advantage of. In many parts of Canada, you can get out and run as early as 5 a.m. or as late at 10 p.m. and still enjoy some daylight. Better still, these times feature the coolest temperatures of the day which helps make for a more enjoyable and productive session, especially if you’re planning a workout.

Ice cream, beer and Popsicles count as effective ways to cool off

Running in hot and humid conditions is undoubtedly uncomfortable and there’ll definitely be times when you just want (need!) to stop and cool off. Pre-plan delicious ways to treat yourself after a hot summer run by stocking up on ice cream, Popsicles and Freezies for when you finish. A cold beer is equally refreshing, although we highly recommend you re-hydrate with some water as well. You could also plan your route to end at your favourite summer sweet spot or even at 7-11 for a Slurpee.

You get to avoid heavy and bulky layers

Remember a time not that long ago when you wore three layers of thermal apparel and still felt cold after five minutes outside? Well, now you have the opposite problem. These days, even a single thin and light layer of clothing seems to be too much. Try to invest in a few choice clothing options that are exceptionally light, moisture-wicking and perhaps even UV resistant. Some days may even justify wearing nothing more than a pair of shorts and a sports bra (for women) and maybe just the shorts for guys. Be sure to wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect your eyes and skin.
