The world’s most dangerous trails

For most of us, a run along the road or forest trail brings immediate satisfaction at the end of a long day.  It’s in a runner’s nature to look for challenges. Sometimes that comes in the form of signing up for a longer race distance or shaving minutes off of last year’s PB. But there is also the type of person who sees setting foot on daring trails as being the ultimate test of their strength as a runner. Here are a few of the most challenging and dangerous trails for the daredevil runner:

Caminito Del Rey

This trail located in southern Spain in El Chorro has a reputation for being incredibly risky. Those who travel it will walk on sections of boardwalk that jut out off the side of a cliff. Some know it as the world’s most dangerous walkway. That name isn’t unwarranted. Created in 1921, this pathway has been the cause of death for many many people. The 1990’s and 2000’s saw so many deaths that the trail was shut down for renovations which supposedly had a five million-dollar price tag. It reopens just next week.

Kalalau Trail

This Hawaiian trail ends at a gorgeous beach if you make it that far. Running along this route will bring you past valcanoes and streams that have the tendency to flood during rainy stretches. Crawler’s Ledge sees an intimidating drop-off. Don’t venture here if you’re timid. Over 100 people have died on this one.

Drakensberg Traverse

Drakensberg Traverse is located in South Africa and will be a rewarding site for the outdoorsy and brave runner. Deaths and accidents are recorded every single year (before 1985, 55 people died). A year ago, runners Ryan Sandes and Ryno Griesel ran the 204 kilometres in less than 42 hours. That’s the fastest known time.

Mount Hua Shan

If boards nailed to the rocky side of a mountain is your idea of a great pathway, visiting Mount Hua Shan in China might be an appealing spot for you. Keep in mind that tackling this one means that you’re not likely going to be able to run the whole thing though as certain sections wouldn’t allow it. This one has also been called the most dangerous in the world. Get ready for near vertical ascents but beautiful views.

Aonach Eagach Ridge

This one is great for those curious about running in the Scottish Highlands. There are accidents here every year mostly in the top ridge that has steep drops on either side. If heights don’t phase you, the running experience will be incredible.
