Yuki Kawauchi may not have won the Fukuoka Marathon on Dec. 1 or the Hofu Yomiuri Marathon on Dec. 15, but he still set a different record.

Kawauchi, after running 2:09:15 in Fukuoka and 2:09:05 in Hofu Yomiuri, is now the first man to ever run two sub-2:10 marathons in two weeks.

Kawauchi rushed to hospital after winning ultra

“It was disappointing to lose, but more than competing I was here to run the time.  I’m really happy that I broke 2:10 again.  Next year I’ll be back to win,” he told the blog Japan Running News.

He holds a PB of 2:08:14, one of the top times in the country’s history. He’s a crowd favourite both in and outside Japan for his rise to prominence on his own accord outside the usual Japanese path to athletic success in large corporate based sponsorships.

Even more impressive, Kawauchi holds down a full-time job working for the Japanese government as a high school administrator and still manages time to train for and race many more marathons than most of his competitors. Unlike many other athletes of his calibre, he doesn’t have enough time to run twice each day, but still manages to run with the best in the world.
