VIDEO: Man chugs 13 beers during half-marathon, still runs 1:43

The beer half-marathon is like the beer mile, but with 13 times the amount of running.

Beer Half-Marathon

There’s the beer mile, the beer two-mile and an even more stomach-churning spin-off: the beer half-marathon.

University of Notre Dame (Indiana) senior Emmet Farnan drank one beer for each of a half-marathon’s 13 miles recently and completed the feat in less than two hours. Opting to drink the beers via the shotgun method – poking a hole towards the bottom of the can and drinking through said hole after opening the tab – Farnan ran the beer half-marathon in 1:43:42. That’s 4:45 per kilometre pace, while drinking, for 21.1K.

He captured the entire thing on camera – a requirement for record-keeping purposes – and the video, which contains some NSFW language, has been seen more than 135,000 times on YouTube. The drinking was done as part of an official race too, the Holy Half-Marathon, a student-organized event in South Bend, Ind., on April 1. A friend carried the beer while biking alongside Farnan for quick access at each mile marker. It was a last-minute decision as Farnan captioned the end-of-race photo with the hashtag #IMadeThisDecisionYesterday.

When taking into account beer mile regulations, Farnan’s drink of choice, Coors Light, does not fulfill the five per cent ABV requirement. Beermile.com lists the beer half-marathon record as 2:14. One YouTube video shows a man completing a beer half-marathon in 1:28 though it was not part of an official race. (Shotgunning is not allowed under beer mile rules.)
